Terry Venables: This Is Your Life

He was born in Bethnal Green, East London in 1943. He played for Chelsea, Tottenham, QPR and Crystal Palace.

Veno, expecting a tough game in the second leg of a European tie in Rome, listened to Tommy Docherty, the Chelsea manager gave his side their instructions. During the pre match kick in, Terry Venables gave his instructions. "Marvin Hinton, you play as sweeper", more instructions followed. Playing to Venables tactics, Chelsea held on for a draw.

"I was being interviewed for the job (Barcelona) by their president, Jose Luiz Nunez, and I was a rank outsider. Nunez leaned over and flipped open his cigar box and, to his embarrassment, it was empty. I reached down into my socks and produced 2 cigars". Terry Venables explaining how he got the Barcelona job and how to keep cigars from becoming crumpled.

Venni also managed Crystal Palace and QPR before going to Spain. At Palace, his young side were dubbed "The Team Of The 80s" when they were promoted to Division 1 in 1981. They were quickly relegated. Tel moved onto QPR and took their Division 2 side to the FA Cup Final. They lost to Spurs in a replay. At QPR, Tel tried to buy the club. The deal never materialised. He also tried to buy Portsmouth. He failed again.

"He's got the mind of a grasshopper". Irving Scholar, former Spurs chairman, on Terry Venables.

As Barcelona coach, one of the first things El Tel did was to sell Maradona to Napoli for an awful lot of pesetas. Then next thing was to sign Steve Archibald as Maradona's replacement.

Back from Spain, Venos was appointed Spurs manager, he brought Gary Lineker with him. Again he tried to buy the club. This time he succeeded. Almost. Last summer, there was speculation that he might buy Barnet.

Outside soccer, Ven is a writer. "They Used To Play On Grass" received critical acclaim on publication. Another of his literary efforts surfaced as a Thames TV "Minder" type series starring Nicholas Ball. It was so bad I can't remember its title.

A piece of advice from Bobby Robson on managing England. "The first 8 years were the worst".

"That's your allotment". Tabloids saying goodbye to Graham Taylor

What kind of vegetable will Terry Venables become? Answers on the back of a £5 note to the usual address please.
